Requesting and Borrowing Materials from Other Libraries

http://kb.library.bethel.edu/articles/272/

This article is currently unmaintained, and may not be accurate.

  • The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Department provides the service that obtains materials which are not available on campus from other libraries. There is no charge for either books or articles.
  • The ILL Service is available only to current Bethel University students, faculty, and staff.

You may request:

  • Books not available in the BUL or in CLICnet.
  • Articles not available at the BUL or available electronically.
  • Items that are currently unavailable because they are checked out, missing, at the bindery, etc.

We do our best to supply the following, but they are sometimes difficult to obtain:

  • Dissertations and theses. (Typically only the library of the institution where the thesis or dissertation was written has a copy, and some do not loan theses items.)
  • Reference books, best sellers, pre-20th century items, archival and manuscript materials, genealogies and local histories, ENTIRE issues of journals, musical scores, computer software, audiovisual materials, etc.

All requests are processed as soon as possible- usually within 24 hours.

Requests from other libraries around the region ( MN, SD, ND, WI) may take up to 2 weeks. PLEASE allow sufficient time for your request.

The status of your requests will appear in your ILLiad account in the Review Requests section after they have been generated.

You may view, modify, or cancel a request in your ILLiad account under View/Modify Outstanding Requests.

You will receive an e-mail notice when your request comes in.

  • If it's a book, pick it up at the Circulation Desk in the BUL and return to the BUL drop boxes when finished or due.
  • If it's an article your email notice with tell you:

To view the article online (email includes a link to ILLiad).

OR

That we received your article as a printed copy and the article will be sent to
your P.O. Box or the on-campus CAPS office.

If you can't open the article you received electronically, contact Gene Kenney (651)635-8733, Library Electronic Services.

If your request has been canceled, you will get an email in your Bethel account saying the request has been canceled and why (couldn't meet the deadline, couldn't be located within our lending region, etc.)

Renewing books from other libraries

Many books, but not all, can be renewed.

Interlibrary Loan books require contact with the lending library. You must request renewals BEFORE the due date. Most libraries will not consider a renewal request past the due date.

Please bring the book to the Circulation Desk a day or two before your due date, and ask for Betty Bond (the Interlibrary Loan Supervisor). If she is not in the Library, leave the book with your phone number and your requested renewal time (how long you would reasonably like to keep the book). She will contact you with renewal results within 1-2 days.
You can keep a book from another library for 3 weeks on average, but it may vary by library.

  • The due date will be on a sleeve attached to the cover of the book. Please leave this sleeve on the book.
  • PLEASE return books on time to help us maintain good relations with the lending libraries.
